The Digital Twin: It’s Not Just for Breakfast Anymore — Insights from James Haw at OTS

About the Session

What do a good breakfast and a high-performing industrial facility have in common? According to James Haw, Vice-President at Operations Technology Specialists (OTS), everything.

At the Oil and Gas Digital Twin Conference 2024, James—an automation veteran with 35+ years of experience and winner of the 2023 ISA Excellence in Technical Achievement Award—will serve up a unique and thought-provoking session titled: “The Digital Twin. It’s Not Just for Breakfast Anymore.”

In his talk, James draws an engaging analogy: if the entire lifecycle of a plant were compressed into one day, engineering and construction would be “breakfast”—the foundational meal that sets the tone for everything that follows. Just as a poor breakfast can derail the rest of your day, a poor start in your digital strategy can lead to inefficient operations and costly transformations down the line.

James will argue that a robust Digital Twin strategy from the start—built with existing tools and resources—can prevent the pain of future digital transformations. Attendees will walk away with a deeper appreciation for Digital Twins as a foundational operations technology, essential for pushing plant performance into the top quartile—faster and more cost-effectively than traditional methods.

Key Topics Covered:

Key Topics

01 Breakfast as a Metaphor – Why the beginning of a plant's lifecycle is the most critical phase, and how it shapes operational success
02 Avoiding Painful Transformations – How getting the digital foundation right early can prevent expensive overhauls later
03 Digital Twin as an OT Backbone – Why it's not about fancy tech but smart use of existing tools to drive high performance and efficiency
