In-person on-demand session

Methane Detection efforts using Satellites & IOT devices

SPEAKERS

Osama Hanna
Osama Hanna Senior Industry Digital Strategist, Microsoft

Osama Hanna, Industry Digital Strategist at Microsoft, is a seasoned Digital Transformation Consultant with over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. With an MBA from The American University in Cairo and executive education in Organizational Leadership from London Business School, he brings deep expertise in business strategy, innovation, and technology-driven growth. Throughout his career, he has helped organizations adopt forward-thinking digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and unlock new business opportunities. He is all set to share his views on Methane Detection Efforts Using Satellites & IoT Devices, focusing on how cutting-edge technologies can support environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance in the energy sector.

He will share his views on the limitations of traditional SCADA systems, which often lack the granular visibility required to comprehensively monitor pipelines stretching hundreds or thousands of kilometers. He will explore how leveraging long-range (LoRa) IoT technology can significantly enhance operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. By utilizing ultra long-range communication and a star network topology, operators can efficiently collect data from geographically dispersed points while minimizing the time, complexity, and infrastructure typically needed. He will also highlight how rugged IoT devices offer a flexible, scalable solution that integrates seamlessly with existing systems and can be rapidly deployed even in remote or harsh environments. Ignasi will emphasize the opportunity for the oil and gas sector to accelerate the adoption of LoRa IoT—benefiting from advancements already embraced by adjacent industries like mining and construction.

He is all set to share his views on the rising importance of ESG and the growing global focus on sustainability, particularly within the oil and gas sector. Methane emissions have emerged as a critical concern, as methane is 84 times more potent than CO₂ and significantly harder to eliminate. Osama will emphasize that the most effective strategy is to curb these emissions at the source using a combination of satellite imaging and IoT technologies. He will also highlight how, despite growing awareness from organizations like the IEA, up to 75% of methane emissions remain unaccounted for. This underscores the urgent responsibility oil and gas companies have to take meaningful action in detecting and reducing methane emissions through innovative, technology-driven solutions.

Key Topics-

1. ESG has been gaining momentum with a parallel growing interest in Sustainability.

2. Methane Emissions from the O&G represents a key area to look after. Methane is 84 times more potent than CO2 and so much harder to remove.

3. The best approach to handle Methane emissions is to curb them. This can be achieved using satellite imaging along with other IOT devices

4. IEA (International Environmental Agency) is aware of the dangers posed by the Methane Emissions but lacks the means to measure them. On average 3 of 4 emissions go unaccounted for! O&G companies have a responsibility towards society in curbing Methane Emissions in every possible way.
